Digital Technologies and Farmer Behaviour: Understanding factors influencing human behaviour using psychological theory – Aine Regan (TEAG)

Farmer engagement with digital technologies are required for effective data production and data sharing. However, research shows varying rates of farmer engagement with technologies across different settings. This session will explore the factors influencing farmer engagement with respect to digital technologies. It will incorporate two elements: a presentation providing an overview of academic literature and theory, and a participatory workshop which will act as an active learning exercise. Firstly, a presentation will cover the academic literature and theory pertaining to farmer behaviour and digital technologies. The results of a published scoping study, which incorporates 200 references, will be presented, exploring the social and behavioural sciences literature related to digital agriculture. This methodology provides an extensive overview of this field of research, presenting key themes pertaining to the literature including barriers and facilitators of, as well as anticipated positive and negative impacts of digital technology adoption. Then, a psychological model of behaviour will be presented to the group to become familiar with different theoretical approaches for studying and understanding farmer behaviour. In the remainder of the session, the group will participate in a short participatory workshop to learn more about the value of psychological models to understand behaviour and create targeted behaviour change interventions in the area of digital agriculture. The workshop will be an active learning session whereby the group will learn more about using both psychological models to understand behaviour, and the use of participatory methods in social science research.

Open-data for agricultural business – Davide Taibi (CNR/ITD)

The agriculture sector holds a strategic role for both society and the economy with a strong impact on people’s everyday life. The transition to Industry 4.0, dominated by autonomous intelligent systems driven by data and machine learning, is also affecting the agricultural sector. Specifically, in the agricultural sector, this transition involves the integration of several technologies such as geolocation, Artificial Intelligence, cloud computing, and IoT to monitor and improve crop production in terms of quantity and quality. In this scenario, Open Data is pivotal to facilitating better decision-making with a huge potential to revolutionize the sector worldwide. Weather data, along with data on seed genetics, data on environmental conditions, and soil data can be used to optimize yields and resource efficiency, helping the agricultural sector to face challenges, such as climate change, food security, and population growth. Amongst the several initiatives concerning the use of diverse sources of information, including spatial and non-spatial data, the Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN) promotes open agriculture data sharing to address current and future challenges in this field by fostering innovation, improving productivity, and ensuring food security globally. This talk will guide participants through the multitude of data models, formats, and reference systems that pose challenges to the effective exploitation of open data in the agricultural sector. Moreover, the application of FAIR principles of findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability, will be explored to facilitate the integration of existing open datasets, and support decision-making processes in the agricultural sector.

S.A.R.A. project: Satellite and in situ detected Open data to support the management and the optimization in the use of agricultural lands – Marco Di Salvo (Expleo Italia SpA)

The main objective of S.A.R.A., a R&D project proposed by Expleo Italia S.p.A.and co-financed by Apulia region and Mise, is to create a technological platform able to integrate data from the following areas: Health, Environment and Agriculture. To do this, a trial will be carried out on 1000 volunteers that will consume Apulian foods for three months; their health will be monitored through the use of a smartwatch and also the environment in which they live will be monitored in terms of quality air and climatic conditions. The aim is to discover any correlations between the 3 areas mentioned above. Apart from that, another S.A.R.A.big and important objective is to understand what to grow in uncultivated agricultural land. In fact, in Apulia nowadays there are a lot of uncultivated agricultural land because of Xylella virus that destroyed the great part of Salento olive groves. To do this, we collected a lot of information regarding the conditions of any Apulia agricultural land, such as: health and water stress of its vegetation; characteristics and composition of its subsoil in terms of nutrients; historical and present climatic and atmospheric conditions; drought indicators and finally informations about the quality of water and underground sources closest to the land itself. The data sources used are the multi-spectral satellite images collected from the Copernicus program and other open data collected by in-situ installed sensors.

Our world faces formidable challenges: a growing population, climate volatility, and the urgent need for sustainable food production. In this context, data-driven approaches emerge as powerful allies for modern farmers. They offer insights, precision, and informed decision-making that can transform agriculture. In this tutorial, we will uncover the essence of data-driven applications, with a focus in agriculture. Our discussion progresses systematically, addressing data collection and preprocessing techniques. Emphasis is placed on the significance of clean, qualitative, and relevant data, accompanied by discussions on feature engineering strategies. Exploratory data analysis follows, unveiling patterns and relationships within the data through descriptive statistics and visualizations. Moreover, notable attention is given to supervised and unsupervised machine learning models.
Crucially, we will delve into interpreting model results, focusing on feature importance and interpretability, while also addressing ethical considerations such as fairness, bias, and privacy. Practical applications will serve to contextualize theoretical concepts, bringing theory and real-world scenarios. The lecture concludes with discussions on challenges and emerging trends, including scalability for big data and the influence of artificial intelligence on analytics.

The main goal of this talk is to show how pure mathematics can be applied to real-life phenomena, in particular how concepts and theorems of number theory are used in classical and modern cryptography.
A brief historical excursus of cryptography, from symmetric algorithms to asymmetric public key algorithms, will guide us to the analysis of mathematical concepts and functions underlying the most modern cryptographic systems such as the RSA algorithm.

saffron and olive oil use cases – Pierluigi Gallo (UNIPA)

Pierluigi Gallo will introduce applications of blockchain to the agrifood sector according to a model that goes beyond the farm-to-fork motto and looks at validation mechanisms to guarantee traceability, quality and sustainability. These properties are typically considered for agrifood products while in the talk we extend also to the associated data. Quality of data in agrifood is rising as a prominent research topic that has different implications in terms of data veracity, digital twin, trust domains. The talk will present results of research at the University of Palermo and also their exploitation with SEEDS srl, one of its academic spin-offs to make those results available to companies of the agrifood sector. Two use cases will be discussed: one for the olive oil and another one for saffron; these different scenarios permits to discuss how it is important to implement customized methodologies and computer vision applications for data collection and validation. Media Skills for Researchers Workshop – Aoibhín Moore Heslin (AF)

Public engagement and research communication are increasingly recognised as essential requirements for researchers, especially in the areas of agriculture, technology, and science where misinformation can be rife. Understanding the way the media cover research and learning how to tell the story of your work in an engaging and impactful way is an invaluable skill. Delivered by the team from Airfield Estate, this workshop will focus on how to use various media channels, in both social and traditional forms, to communicate research effectively to a diverse range of audiences. By the end of this workshop, EnTrust DCs should be able to talk about their research in a way that is clear and understandable to a non-research audience, understand the role of social and traditional media in disseminating their research activities and findings, and be able to apply the specific requirements for print, audio, and social media content to their research communications. Designed to equip DCs with the skills required to fulfil the EnTrust Communication and Public Engagement Strategy, this interactive workshop will involve DCs experimenting with tailoring their message to suit various audiences, platforms, and contexts. Participants will work to identify examples of effective research media communication and investigate what techniques work well and why. Participants will work to apply these techniques to their research and will leave the workshop with skills and resources enabling them to contribute to ENTRUST’s goals of public engagement and research communication as well as their own research profile and professional development.

Intellectual Property Rights in the Agri-Food Sector – Chiara Garilli (UNIPA)

The lesson will provide students with an overview of the protection of intellectual property rights (IPRs) in the agri-food Sector. In particular, the analysis will be focused on the main IPRs in the Agri-Food Sector – namely trademarks and indications of geographical origin – whose legal features will be highlighted by the investigation of the most relevant case-law.
Furthermore, students will be asked to debate some relevant topics related to the legal protection of trademarks in the agri-food Sector. 

Data for Estimating the Satisfaction of Software Requirements – Massimo Cossentino (CNR/ICAR)

Software solutions are frequently used to simulate complex systems; they sometimes involve human interaction, and simulation results often produce a large amount of data. Data collection should be carefully planned to ensure that all relevant information (and only that) is saved for future analysis. In this way, we can avoid the risk of repeating the simulations because we need to collect data that was forgotten in the first run.
This talk will introduce an approach for modelling functional requirements (FR) and non-functional requirements (NFR) of the simulation software that allows to define which metrics (and related data) can be used to estimate the satisfaction of software requirements.
The proposed approach starts from the definition of a goal-oriented model of requirements. The model is based on a simple conceptualization of the basic concepts required to model most of the real-world software systems.
Starting from a proper modelisation of the system, the satisfaction of FRs is usually easy to appreciate (and quantify); the challenge consists in estimating the satisfaction of NFRs. Quality constraints will be introduced to operationalise NFRs and refined in terms of numerical constraints upon some metric that can be used to represent the satisfaction of the soft requirement. These metrics will suggest which data has to be collected at the required precision/interval.
